Man run over by van on East Side, gets stuck under it, survives

man stuck under van

The picture pretty much says it all, but this poor guy was crossing the street at 45th and First Avenue yesterday when a van took a left turn and ran him over. He was knocked to the ground, and the van kept going, trapping the victim beneath it.

A police officer was there almost immediately, and FDNY showed up shortly thereafter. The firefighters did basically the same thing they do when someone gets stuck between a subway car and a platform: they inflated air bags underneath the van to lift it above the victim, and then used wood to stabilize it.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where he's in critical but stable condition. The Post ran a picture of him smiling from his hospital bed. He's thankful to the cops and firefighters who rescued him.
