Man attempts courthouse escape by jumping from 5th floor window, survives
A man awaiting police questioning broke away from the officer guarding him at a Manhattan courthouse yesterday, and leapt through a 5th floor window, crashing onto the pavement 50 feet below. He was seriously injured, suffering broken bones, but he survived.
The man had been arrested earlier in the day for drug possession and was found with a kilo of cocaine on him. The officer watching him uncuffed him so he could put on his jacket, but the suspect broke free and made his leap.
Paramedics arrived and stabilized him.
I guess falling from high places is all about how you land. I've read that healthy people have died from falls of just 10 feet, and common wisdom suggests you'll die from most falls above 30 feet or so. This guy seems to have been blessed with some good luck, but he's squandering it by doing dumb things like walking around with a kilo of cocaine on him (and jumping out of windows).
