Teen trying to rappel into his apartment dies after rope breaks
Osano Dallas, a Chelsea high school student, died yesterday morning after a rope he was suspended from broke, sending him about five stories to the ground. Dallas, 16, had apparently forgotten his keys, and was rappelling down to his window from the roof so he could enter his apartment through the window.
Although he hadn't lived in the apartment since a June fire, he returned there to cover up some furniture in anticipation of the apartment's repainting.
This is a terrible thing, but maybe particulaly tough on the first day of school. "The teacher called out his name in attendance — he didn't answer," said a classmate at Humanities High School. A neighbor said she was dreading telling her kids what had happened to Dallas, since they liked him so much.
By all accounts, Dallas was kid who everyone will miss. Friends and neighbors describe him as the life of the party, and he published several poems in his school's literary magazine. "Any time I was sad, he would brighten my day. He was just a friendly, outgoing person," another neighbor said.
