Gunman kills two NYPD detectives in Brooklyn

Two detectives went to question Marlon Legere at his home in Brooklyn because they had received reports from his mother that she felt threatened.

The detectives arrived at the scene and blocked Legere's vehicle. As they approached him, Legere grabbed a detective's gun and fired seven rounds. Both detectives were hit, and Legere was shot in each leg. As Legere fled with the detective's gun by carjacking a minivan, the detectives lay dying. One lived long enough to identify Legere to other officers, directing them to a photo of Legere they had brought along.

The area was swarmed with police officers, helicopters, and police dogs. They located Legere in a nearby building, and stormed it after determining he had no hostages. The officers eventually emerged with Legere on a stretcher.

Legere, 28, is a violent felon with convictions for grand larceny, drugs, assault, and sexual assault.

One of the detectives was a 22-year veteran, the other a 15-year-veteran with 3 children. Officers, predictably, were distraught, particularly because of the killings's proximity to 9/11. "When this first happened, it was like, 'Not today,'...Not that you'd want it to happen any day, but just not today. It just makes it worse," a police spokesman said.

This is the first fatal shooting of a police officer since March 2003, when two undercover detectives were shot while negotiatiating a gun purchase on Staten Island.
