$2 bus fare leads to assault
A 31-year-old Staten Island woman boarded the S78 bus yesterday and refused to put her MetroCard in the fare-box slot. When the driver asked her to pay, she refused, and then hit him in the head with card and refused to exit the bus. Predictably, police were called in, and she was arrested for theft of services, but apparently not assault.
I wonder what this woman was thinking as she stepped on the bus. Did she think the driver would just say, Sure, you can ride for free? Did she know she was going to hit him if he refused to let her ride?
Plus, once she hit him in the head, you'd think she'd realize her chances of getting a free ride were pretty slim, and she should just get off the bus while she had a chance.
I think it's interesting that she was charged with theft of services and not assault: since the bus presumably didn't take her anywhere, she didn't really receive any services.
