Stabbing Death Near Gracie Mansion +

The body of a man with a stab wound to the stomach was found in Carl Schurz Park last night, about 4 blocks from Gracie Mansion. A kitchen knife was nearby. The possibility that the victim stabbed himself has not been ruled out, and it seems he may have been down on his luck, or so Newsday implies, based on the contents of his knapsack: "Police found a backpack with bottles of malt liquor, a Power Bar wrapper and a Duane Reade shopping bag nearby, sources said." Malt liquor and PowerBars? I guess they balance each other out.

Upper East Siders are predictably upset: "So much for walking around here at midnight...Now I know why the mayor doesn't want to live in his mansion," said one. Another: "I walk my dog every night at 11 p.m. right in this park, and nothing ever happens to me. I'm really surprised to hear that something bad happened here," and so on.

Update: Turns out it was a suicide. The guy lived in a doorman-building on East 79th, so it sounds like there is more to the story, although I would bet this is the last we will hear about it in the media. Source: NYP
