Small group of protesters skirmish with cops
In what seems to be about the most violent incident related to the convention so far, members of a group called Black Box Black Block scuffled with police after attempting to set fire to a papier-mache dragon. The fight broke out after cops attempted to arrest one of their members. They found ball bearings and smoke bombs stuffed inside the cardboard tubes they were using to carry their signs. When it was all over, 15 people had been arrested, 9 for felony asault.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelley gave a press conference earlier tonight at which he described this incident. It sounds as if the cops rushed in to arrest the one guy, and then a bunch of cohorts surrounded and attacked the cops.
An aside: Black Block is another one of the "self-described anarchist" groups in the city this week. I like the way the media has been referring to such groups as "self-described" because I think a lot of the members of these groups aren't really anarchists. In some of the stories I've seen, members have said things about unemployment and -- this is almost hard to believe -- health care, and it makes me wonder if these people have looked up "anarchy" in the dictionary lately.
