Pocket Bike Backlash Turns Political
State senator John Sabini of Jackson Heights is calling for a ban on pocket bikes, those miniature motorcycles that are all the rage among kids and idiots this summer. The bikes are legal to sell, but illegal to ride. His sentiment is widely shared by annoyed pedestrians and drivers of grown-up vehicles.
The inevitable finally occurred last week when Donte Pomar, a Queens teenager, was killed while trying to escape police on his miniature motorcyle. (Pomar's family is investigating legal action against the NYPD, while the Daily News helpfully descibes Pomar as "a parolee.")
