Brooklyn woman cares for cats...a little too much +

Live in Brooklyn and haven't seen your cat in a while? Maybe Claire Angelica has it.

Angelica takes in cats she finds on the street, mends them, and finds them new owners. Recently, however, a darker side to this story emerged: she also abducts and repatriates cats who still have caring owners.

Says one neighbor, "She nabs them in the backyards or the front yards, and that's it: Fluffy doesn't come home." Angelica admits to cat-napping cats that patrol the storerooms of various businesses. "I did kidnap a cat [kept by a storeowner]," she said. "They realized it a week later and were really mad, but I figured if it went to the court of public opinion, I'd win."

Well, now the story has indeed gone to the court of public opinion, and this juror feels this woman is overstepping her bounds a little bit. She doesn't seem to be taking any steps to return the cats she finds to their rightful owners, and the problem has become severe enough that the neighbors have noticed the impact: "Everybody's been noticing for the last year and a half that the cats are disappearing," says one.

Now that the cat's out of the bag about her identity, Angelica should be more conscientious about trying to get lost cats back to their homes, rather than running them through this underground railroad of the animal kingdom that seems so much in use lately.

Just because cats wander off, Claire, it doesn't necessarily mean their owners don't care for them.

Finally, I poked around on Google a little and discovered Angelica also takes in dogs from time to time. Better put a leash on that puppy!

Update: The NYT ran a story on Angelica, as did TimeOut NY.
