About this Site

ScaryNY covers the frightening, and often illegal, events that are a daily part of life in New York City. More than just discussing crimes like murders and robberies, we look at unusual occurrences, too: the would-be bridge jumpers, the wild animal keepers and liberators, the steady stream of terrorist alerts, and the uncategorizable oddball happenings that surprise even residents who thought they had seen it all.

Despite its name, this site isn't intended to frighten anyone. Underlying the reports of mayhem and injury is a belief that even though the city can be scary, the events described here challenge us and contribute to New York's unique nature.

ScaryNY is written by Alan Mitchell. Matt Law came up with the idea and founded the site in 2003, writing a year's worth of entries before moving on.

ScaryNY...Reborn

Not wanting Matt Law's brilliant "ScaryNY" site to die and be forgotten after he found himself unable to maintain it, I talked to Matt, and he agreed to let me take it over.

Hopefully, ScaryNY will once again be the central repository for information on the many shootings, street fights, and fugitive animals that enliven and sometimes challenge our city.
