It's Been as Fun as Writing About Crime and Stuff Can Be

Today marks the first anniversary of ScaryNY. It is also the last day of ScaryNY. I'm done. My attention has shifted from local crime, terrorism preparedness and other "scary" things lately, so I'm not going to document these stories anymore. Thanks for reading.

I had this grand plan of going through the archives and pulling out some noteworthy stories, but I'd rather not. You're more than welcome to, though. A lot of the links to news stories are now dead, but I usually quoted the lead and threw in some commentary, so there's something to dig your teeth into.

Thinking back on the year, a few themes jump out at me:

* The MTA is not at all prepared for any kind of emergency. I blame this mainly on the part of their greed, stubbornness and lack of openness. Considering how much New Yorkers rely on the trains and busses, that's bad news.

* NYU had a rough year with suicides.

* A lot of people accidentally shoot themselves with their own guns.

* There are two kinds of people. 1) Folks who are afraid of dying in an act of terrorism. 2) People who say, "what'cha gonna do? What happens, happens."

* Murders and other crimes seem to happen in spurts, especially over weekends with nice weather.

* People who serve the public, including cops, firemen, train operators, bus drivers, sanitation works, cab drivers and everyone else that I've left of the list have really, really, hard jobs. They deserve more credit than they get.

* While New York is a giant city, it's really not much more than a bunch of small neighborhoods. I know this has been said before by people smarter than me, but it really is true. And I wouldn't trade that for the world.

Again, thanks for reading. Regular, non-scary blogging to continue over at About Matt Law. Some other projects may or may not be in the works.
