I'm Alive

Women in taxi accident recovering

"Her leg was broken and her mouth wired shut, but Liz Leger managed to say two words of gratitude when her sister visited her at the hospital."

Those words were, "I'm alive."

This is the woman, who along with her mother and a cab driver, smashed into a midtown gate on Saturday.

"A second later, the cab lost control. Sommer told Gilhooley that she remembers the taxi careening down the sidewalk, dodging parking meters and then finally slamming into a metal security gate."

Holy crap.

"Police said the cab, driven by Jean Josef Pierre of Brooklyn, was going east on its approach to the intersection of East 54th Street and Park Avenue. It sideswiped a parked car on the western edge of the intersection before careening to the eastern side, where it slammed into a metal garage gate on the corner, police said."

They say the weather kept people inside and off the sidewalks, preventing additional injuries.

"Police ticketed him with unsafe speeding, but have not pressed criminal charges."

Is there safe speeding?
