Boing
"The front car of an L subway train derailed yesterday after the train failed to stop normally at the station at Eighth Avenue and 14th Street, the authorities said. Deirdre Parker, a spokeswoman for New York City Transit, said the car collided with the bumping block, a device placed at the end of each subway line to stop trains that have not been braked to a complete stop, and derailed at 1:30 p.m."
Ah, a bumping block. That's what that the large springs at the end of subway lines are called. I've always been fascinated by the concept of these things stopping a runway train. I guess they work.
