NYU Suicide Picture - Too Far?

NYU REELING OVER FOURTH DEATH LEAP

"The daughter of a Silicon Valley executive has become the fourth New York University student to take a fatal plunge this academic year."

I had a flashback to my days as a Media Studies major at Fordham University this morning. Did the New York Post go too far in putting this image on their front page? Does the image add anything to the story? Is it newsworthy? There's never a black and white answer to these sorts of questions.

AP - NYU student kills self in jump from roof

"University spokesman John Beckman said the community's pain was intensified by the New York Post's decision Wednesday to publish a front-page photograph it said showed Chien jumping to her death. The newspaper already had run the photograph inside its Sunday paper, but reprinted it after learning of Chien's identity.

"'Given that this had already been in the paper once, it seems to show an appalling lack of judgment and insensitivity to the young woman's family and a disregard for the feelings of students at NYU,' Beckman said."

Ugh. I didn't know this was the second time they used it. Talk about milking something (I assume they saw as a good thing) for all it's worth.
