Floating to the Top

Fishing for bodies cops' rite of spring

"His [Spalding Gray] was among 70 bodies recovered by the NYPD's harbor unit in the past three years, most in March and April, police said. Last year there were 29, up from 15 the year before.

"With the warming of the water, bodies decompose, release gases and rise to the surface. By studying tides, police can roughly gauge where a body might come up if they know where it went in the water."

I walked around the shore of Roosevelt Island yesterday and was thinking about this very thing. Weird.
