Breaking News: Breaking News Used Too Often

'Breaking' a bad habit

"Watch local newscasts these days and you'll get the impression that there's a ton of breaking news going on.

"Repeatedly, graphics flash on the screen telling viewers what's ahead. It happens so often that it's hard to imagine anyone can keep up.

"But is it really "breaking news," the kind viewers must see? Sometimes, yes, but more often than not, no."

Not really scary, but it can be. I just got rid of cable TV, so I've been watching a lot more local news. It really is true. They have breaking news on everything. The weather is breaking news, for Christ's sake.
