The New Gangs of New York
"Gang slayings shot up nearly 80% across the city last year, a startling statistic given the Police Department's success in pushing overall murders to historic lows."
This story is actually a pretty good introduction to gangs in New York City and what the NYPD is trying to do curtail gang violence. Like this -- I didn't know this...
"Among the most active are the Bloods, the Crips, the Latin Kings, the Ņetas, The Mexican Boys, Los Vagos (The Lazy Ones), Los Traviesos (The Troublemakers), Los Pitufos (The Smurfs) and a gang of Salvadoran nationals called Mara Salvatrucha or MS 13."
