Remembering Catherine "Kitty" Genovese: 40 years later

More details on the Catherine "Kitty" Genovese symposium forum I mentioned here. I plan on attending.

---------------------

Dear Friend,

Even 40 years after the Genovese tragedy, journalist Jim Rasenberger's sensitive and powerful report in the Feb 8 Sunday Times (City, pp. 1,9) reveals many new facts about the case and its aftermath. Following his brief mention there of our public forum on March 9, many folks with an interest or some involvement in the tragedy have asked about attending on March 9.

Yes, the session is March 9, Tuesday 11:30-12:40 am at Fordham, 113 W. 60 st., room 109 (street level). No pregistration or admission. Guests welcome, coffee served. There is a display table for folks to distribute their information near the entry. An early (non-final) draft of the program is below and attached FYI.

Warm regards,

Harold Takooshian, PhD
Past-President, APA International Division 52

DRAFT 2/10/04 -- Remembering Catherine "Kitty" Genovese: 40 years later **

When the serial rapist who killed Kitty Genovese on March 13, 1964 was asked how he dared to continue attacking her in front of 38 witnesses, he coldly replied "I knew they wouldn't do anything. People never do." Indeed many of those 38 inactive witnesses in 1964 later told police simply "I didn't want to get involved."

Why do Ms. Genovese' unanswered cries still resound 40 years later? How different is urban society today, in part because of her tragedy? These questions are addressed by 10 experts in this public forum. Each presentation is just five minutes, to allow time for questions and audience dialog.
