Fordham security guard discusses his job
"Rain, sleet, snow or sun, he stands patiently next to the security desk waiting for you to find your I.D. in the mess at the bottom of your backpack. Four hundred students pass by him every day, but most could not tell you his name. His name is Matthew Burney and he has been at the desk for three years now."
A fascinating profile of a security guard at my old school. Ok, fine... it's not fascinating at all.
"He actively watches C-SPAN and spends his time channel surfing between CNN and the History Channel."
You don't say.
This is nuts: "Security officers are not permitted to spend time during their shifts talking to one another."
John Carroll, Director of Security apparently thinks Matthew Burney and his fellow security guards are idiots: "'The guards are good guys — good ladies and gentlemen; they understand the policy, but don’t know how to articulate it.' Carroll said. Carroll was concerned that mistakes would be made on the part of the guards if I asked specific questions. Carroll even suggested that Burney’s direct supervisor, Henshaw, sit in on our interview."
When I was going to school, I had a lot respect for the security guards, but absolutely none for their bosses. Can you hear me now, John Carroll? The boss folks were over the top back then. I can't imagine what they're like now with the whole of homeland security thing.
Anyway, while I'm talking about Fordham, read about how those bastards from Harvard stole our school colors.
