Cathedral of St. John the

Cathedral of St. John the Divine

So I actually got up the energy to leave my apartment this weekend and hit one of the openhousenewyork events, specifically the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The tour Guide was great and I learned a ton of little facts that I'll be able to bore people with for years (did you know the cathedral is so large, the Statue of Liberty can be placed upright inside?)

As the tour was coming to an end, the guide pointed out a sculpture of Jeremiah. Now I'm not really up on my biblical history, but he explained that Jeremiah was the guy who told everyone about the end of the world and other horrible stuff like that (if you actually know his role, please excuse my historical hack job). This statue, crafted some time between 1988 and 1997, was placed on a pedestal depicting the destruction of lower Manhattan by what's either a tidal wave or more likely, a large explosion. Take a look at this detailed picture taken by someone other than me. Freaky.

Below, and cut off a little in this picture, are carvings of the reconstruction efforts. Remember -- this was carved well before Sept. 11. The coincidental/ironic nature of the whole thing still has me shaking my head. If you have a chance to visit the cathedral, I'd highly recommend it.
