9/11 Still Strains New York
9/11 Still Strains New York Psyche
"A New York Times poll of 976 adult New Yorkers, taken last week, underscores how much lasting damage 9/11 inflicted on the city's psyche. Two-thirds of the people questioned said they were very concerned about another attack in New York, slightly more than felt that way a year ago. In their routine moments, New Yorkers indicated, they are thinking and talking less often about the terrorist attack than they were a year ago, but the subtext of discomfort is every bit as intense."
I think this is a little deceiving, though it's tough to say w/o knowing all of the details of the survey's questions. I think a lot of people here think another attack with happen, but I think a smaller number are directly "concerned" about it. I think a lot of people have adopted the, "what happens will happen" attitude about terrorism. I think less people are "scared" of dying in an act of terrorism and more are taking a reasonable approach to things. Thinking about how to get away from their offices in a hurry if they have to, are these shoes ok to walk in, do I have the stuff at home that I need if I need it? Those sorts of things. I don't think these things are signs of "discomfort" as much as signs of being realistic and practical.
