"But it's a far cry from last night, when the situation bordered on chaos. A piece of the braking mechanism on a train broke off and hit the third rail. There were explosions and smoke got into the train. Passengers panicked."
Another case of something happening on the subway and passengers not being told what to do. So they broke windows. When all else fails, break windows, scream and run.
